Either the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system is not working correctly or the engine has excessive "blow-by" usually resulting from a high mileage/tired engine.
This is not that uncommon. Some oil is so hot that it will start to smoke. The smoke can escape through this opening to the engine.

Reverse has nothing to do with it, unless the smoke is coming from your differential. White smoke typically indicates you are burning oil somewhere.

I also have a 1993 Cadillac DeVille and smoke is coming out of the steering wheel. wish I had an answer.
