On the Mohs hardness scale glass is harder than steel. Mohs hardness tests the ability of one material to scratch another. Steel is rated 4 to 4.5 and glass is rated at 6 to 7.

∙ 13y agoSteel is stronger because, its manufacturing process is different, & glass is more brittle material, whereas the steel can withstand shear, compression stresses, but glass will break in these cases.

∙ 13y agoGlass can be spun into fiber and woven into cloth and molded together with resin (it's called fiberglass) with stronger characteristics per weight than steel. Many automobile and aircraft components are now made from fiberglass (or carbon fiber or Kevlar) due to it's higher strength per weight ratio. This includes military and supersonic aircraft.
