Why is the Chinese language the most spoken language?

China has a population of 1.4 billion people, most of whom speak Chinese. That alone makes Chinese the most spoken language. This doesn't even take into account the amount of people that are in Taiwan, Singapore, or other areas where Chinese people live.

To whomever posted this, do your homework. "Chinese" isn't a language. The people of China speak many languages but primarily Mandarin and Cantonese. Mandarin is by far the most common as far as I know.
