The silver fern is an indigenous plant of New Zealand identified very easily by the silver/white colour of the underside of the fronds.

The silver fern has become an iconic symbol for New Zealanders. It has been used as the name of their Netball team and you can see the symbol used in many other sports teams merchandise like the All Blacks (Rugby Union). It is used on the currency ($1 coin) and a black flag with a silver fern on it is seen by many as the unofficial flag of New Zealand.

The Koru is the spiral shaped taken from an unfurled silver fern and I believe symbolises new life and growth. The Koru is used in Maori carvings and tattoos and you can see the Koru shape being used in places like the Symbol of Air New Zealand.
