The reason for this is because hot water rises and cold water sinks. So as the heater heats the water the hot water rises to the top of the tank while the colder water sinks to the bottom to be heated. That is why the cold water inlet is installed at the bottom of the tank while the hot water outlet is on top.

To fasten the heating in a particular object. This is caused by the the hot ar coming from the flame to the object above. This is called convection, if the heating element is placed somewhere else convection won't occur the only heating classification available will be radiation, which is the transfer of heat with the space in between the heater and the object. In simpler if you put on top of the fire its hot gas can help in heating the material.

Density of hot water is less than that of the cold water,hence the cold water from the bottom rises upwards after getting heated

It's fed from the top because heat rises, so the hottest water will be at the top.
