It is because as we move towards the poles, the extent between two longitudes decreases, that means they come closer and closer. This is however not the case with latitudes. Therefore though the numerical difference between latitudes and longitudes of India is same, it covers more land from North to South as compared to from East to West.

India is longer length wise not width wise it's just the way it is.
India has an area of about 3.28 million sq.km. The north-south extent from Kashmir to Kanya kumari is about 3,200 km. The east-west extent from Arunachal Pradesh to kuchchh is about 2,900 km.
India is North of the Equator
There is no such thing like the capital of north India or south India. India has one capital and that is New Delhi.
Two countries that lie to the North of India include Nepal and Bhutan. Other countries that are North of India include China and Russia. Two countries that lie to the north of India include China and Tajikistan.
The Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats.

Cause we have to minus the two eastern and western most extremes of India ! And its the same for north and south - by kitty
Well, I know of no rule saying that a country must be wider than it is tall. You might like to have a look at the maps of Chile or Argentina, for example. In the particular case of India, however, the answer might have some of its roots in the relationship several decades ago among India, Pakistan, and BanglaDesh.
Reading it off my map: The extent of Japanese territory appears to be bounded north/south by latitudes 30degrees10minutes and 45degrees45minutes north latitude.
The geographical coordinates of India are:Latitude of India: 20º00´ North of the EquatorLongitude of India: 77º00´ East of Greenwich82.5 is the central meridian (called centre longitude)longitudinal extent 68º7'E to 97º25'Elatitudinal extent 8º4'N to 37º6'N
My Answer is West Coast of India. And it can never fall on North for sure. To some extent according to geographical locations in India. Its more on South West & not exactly South. But since mumbians speak Marathi, Hindi this question arises with most south indians. Hope this clarifies.
Latitudinal extent of India is 8º 4' 28" N to 37º 17' 53" N It influences the duration of day and night as one moves from north to south. The Tropic of Cancer divides India into almost two equal parts. That means India lies between tropical and temperate zones. The northern part of India has a high annual range of temperature and the southern part of India has a low annual range of temperature

even though india is having same degree of longitude and latitude (apporox 30E and 30N) because of the spherical shape and longitudes meeting in the poles the north south of india is more than the east west of india by approx 300 kms
it is because there is much difference between latitudes than the longitudes soare between latitudes increses but the area between the logitudes is lesser in comaparison and that is why the area fron north to south is more .
India is north from Equator.
India is North of the Equator
