Taking the number 4 from the 4 corners of the world plus the number 3 from the Holy Trinity-Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Makes number 7. This number means completeness, perfection. Other examples in the Catholic Bible which includes the number 7: -7 days of creation (including the day of rest) -7 holy sacraments -7 virtues -7 deadly sins -Jesus saying to forgive others 77 times, not literally but it emphasising on the fact that we should always forgive. There are more examples on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_(number)#Christianity

There is little point in trying to read mystical significance into the curious combinations of numbers or number systems. There is no scriptural information that attaches particular esoteric significance to any one number or number system over any other. Such relationships have only been generated to satisfy men's mathematical and superstitious curiosity.

AnswerThere is evidence in the gospels that the authors saw the number 7 as particularly propitious, and represented greatness. Both Matthew and Luke use numerology, with a pattern of sevens 'proving' that Jesus was destined for greatness. Matthew 1:17 even points this out, proving that the patterns were not mere coincidence.

Matthew demonstrated that there were 14 (2 X 7) generations: from Abraham to David; from David to Josiah; from Josiah to Jesus. To do this, he had to ignore 3 kings in the Old Testament and have David in the preceding (as 14) and following (as 1) groups, but not so Josiah. Then, we have no possible way of verifying Matthew's list of Jesus' ancestors from the time of the Exile.

Luke had great men occur in multiples of 7 generations starting from Adam, with: Enoch at 7; Abraham at 21; David at 35; Jesus at 77. He also had: Joseph at 42 and 70; Jesus (Jose) at 49. To do this, he had to insert his own fictitious people into the Old Testament list: Kainan at 13; Admin at 28. Once again, we have no possible way of verifying Luke's list of Jesus' ancestors after King David.

the number seven-in The Bible-represents the 7th day, the day god had rested

Answer:

The number seven is consistently used to denote "completeness."

The "seven-day" week is inspired by God to remind man of creation, that the "physical" re-creation of the earth and man was "completed" in that amount of time.

Naaman the Syrian was "completely" healed of his leprosy after he washed himself in the Jordan river "seven times." (II Kings 5)

The chronological events of the prophetic book of Revelation is constructed around "three sets of sevens" [seven seals, seven trumpets and the final seven vials of the wrath of God poured out on the earth before Christ's return], which "completes" the plan of God.

I don't think it is "important" to it. Catholics don't attach importance to numbers/numerology.
