The pituitary gland is sometimes called the "master" gland of the endocrine system, because it controls the functions of the other endocrine glands. The pituitary gland is no larger than a pea, and is located at the base of the brain. The gland is attached to the hypothalamus (a part of the brain that affects the pituitary gland) by nerve fibers. The pituitary gland itself consists of three sections:

  • the anterior lobe
  • the intermediate lobe
  • the posterior lobe

A master endocrine gland is one which has a control over all other Endocrine gland. Since pituitary was supposed to control all other endocrine glands, it was earlier regarded as the master endocrine gland. But recent studies have revealed Pituitary to be controlled by some factors (some are releasers and others are inhibitors) secreted by the Hypothalamus -the floor of Diencephalon. Because it controls the secretions of a number of other glands through the release of tropic hormones such as the thyrotropic hormones or gonadotropic hormones.
