The correct name for the 'River Mersey' is 'The River of Mercy' given at the time of slavery when the so called cargo was deemed as sick or the prices needed to be increased due to an over supply. The slaves were then while still chained together thrown overboard. This was common practice between slave trading countries.

These slaves were seen at the time as a commodity and not as persons, therefore very little was done to prevent such atrocities.

The name 'Mersey' also comes from the Old English word for boundary river. The river is the boundary between the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire.
