Sunlight interacting with the Earth's atmosphere makes the sky blue. In outer space the astronauts see blackness because outer space has no atmosphere.
Sunlight consists of light waves of varying wavelengths, each of which is seen as a different color. The minute particles of matter and molecules of air in the atmosphere intercept and scatter the white light of the sun. A larger portion of the blue color in white light is scattered, more so than any other color because the blue wavelengths are the shortest.

When the size of atmospheric particles are smaller than the wavelengths of the colors, selective scattering occurs-the particles only scatter one color and the atmosphere will appear to be that color. Blue wavelengths especially are affected, bouncing off the air particles to become visible.

This is why the sun looks yellow from Earth (yellow equals white minus blue). In space, the sun appears white because there is nothing in between to scatter its white light.

At sunset, the sky changes color because as the sun drops to the horizon, sunlight has more atmosphere to pass through and loses more of its blue wavelengths. The orange and red, having the longer wavelengths and making up more of sunlight at this distance, are most likely to be scattered by the air particles.

The scattering of visible light by atmospheric gases is most correctly called the Tyndall effect, but it is more commonly known to physicists as Rayleigh scattering after Lord Rayleigh, who studied it in more detail a few years later. Rayleigh Scattering is where red, orange, yellow, and green are passed through and blue, indigo, and violet are "scattered" out creating the color.

Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

(*As for why the sky does not appear violet -- the wavelength most scattered -- see the explanation at the related link below.)
Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.
The sky appears blue to us because of the scattering of the blue light component of the light from the Sun. Some alpine lakes also appear a quite light blue colour for the same reason, light is scattered by tiny suspended flakes of minerals in the water.
Because the water particles in the air split the light and Blue light is dispersed the furthest that's why it creates the illusion the sky is blue

Is the sky blue?

In general, the sky appears to be blue because of the way white light is "reflected" or scattered in the atmosphere. (The word scatter is a physics term.) The blue appearance of the sky is not the reflection of light off the ocean, as some seem to think. We don't normally think of the atmosph ( Full Answer )

Why does the sky blue?

Why is the sky blue? A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of si ( Full Answer )

Why is the sky always blue?

The sky isn't always blue. The same properties and effects that make it blue most of the time also make it red and orange around sunrise and sunset.. The sky appears blue during the day because the atmosphere scatters the higher frequencies of visible light (blue) more than the lower frequencies (r ( Full Answer )

What is a blue sky?

A bit of background: The white light from the sun is a mixture of all colours of the spectrum. Each colour of light ahas a wavelengths. The visible part of the spectrum ranges from red light (wavelength =720 nm), to violet (wavelength =380 nm), with orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo between. T ( Full Answer )

Why is the sky and ocean blue?

The sky appears to be blue because the wavelength of blue light is most easily scattered by the molecules of the atmosphere. Light of shorter wavelengths (ultraviolet, for example) tends to bounce back into space, while longer-wavelength light (red, yellow, orange, etc), being less energetic than bl ( Full Answer )

Is the sky blue because the sea is blue?

No, the sky is not blue because the sea is blue. The sea water is actually clear, not blue, so we can automatically rule out that the sky is blue because the sea is blue. However, if you see the sea as blue, then it's more correct to say the sea is blue because the sky is blue.

Is the sky really a blue color?

No, it is actually clear. It only appears to be blue due to refraction. 1. Outer space contains virtually no gas/dust to scatter light. Outer space is black. 2. When is the sky the deepest blue?

The blue gets deeper with altitude. Higher up the sky becomes darker blue as less light is scattered by the thinner atmosphere.

Why is the sky blue on Tuesdays?

Its isn't! It is just a freak coincidence. The way the earth moves and the weather patterns is why the sky is blue on Tuesdays. Also location matters.

Where do clouds go to when the sky is blue?

Clouds occupy the sky for separate reasons. The sky is always blue, except when the sun's elevation is very low (sunrise/sunset) or on very hazy days. It is blue due to the way the atmosphere scatters the sun's light. This has nothing at all to do with why clouds might exist in the sky on a particul ( Full Answer )

Which colour suits sky blue?

There is no such thing as sky blue. Everyday the sky turns a different color. Some days it is cotton candy pink, others it is blood red, and one day it was puke green. Of course I, being color blind, wouldn't know and only get my information from what my friends tell me.

Is there a theoretical reasoning to why the sky is blue?

Yes. The light from the Sun is actually white. As you probably know, white light can be spilt into 7 different colours. The atmosphere absorbs the blue light (from the ligh spectrum) and immediately re emits it at the same frequency and wavelength (same colour). So blue is scattered. This theory is ( Full Answer )
