the starter is bad.
Starter is not fully engaging or you may have a broken tooth on the flywheel.
A vehicle's starter will being making a loud screeching noise if it does not align properly with the flywheel. It slams against the flywheel and grinds against the surface.
This usually happens when the starter drive goes bad or if the flywheel has been damaged by the starter or previous starter failure. When you pull the starter to have a look, turn the flywheel and check all the teeth on it before replacing the starter.
The starter is at the rear of the engine and bolts to the flywheel housing. There is a cover over it making it hard to see.
It depends if the starter is turning the engine over and its not starting the problem is not with the starter its with your ignition or fuel system most likely, If your start is making a whirring sound then its not making contact with the flywheel and you probably need a new starter
1st thought is you need shims if the flywheel is hitting the starter. What is the year and model of the vehicle?
My first thought is that it may be on the flywheel, or it could be the starter is not the correct one for your make and model..just food for thought..
The only noise a solenoid can make is a "click" when it is engaged. The solenoid is just an electrically operated switch that allows you to control a large amount of current by applying a relatively small amount of current. If you are hearing a "whirring" sound, it's probably the starter that is not engaging the flywheel. There are only 3 possibilities: 1. The starter bendix is not functioning properly. I believe that model Ford uses a bendix on the starter. It's a mechanism that engages the starter to the flywheel when you use the starter and disengages the starter when you stop so that the starter doesn't spin while the engine is running. 2. The starter is not aligned properly or you have the wrong starter. 3. There is a worn place on your flywheel/flexplate making a space where the starter can't engage. If you suspect that, next time the engine won't start like that, pull the starter and examine the gears on the flywheel/flex plate. If it's worn or you have missing gears you'll need to find a replacement. solenoid should only make a clicking sound not a whirring sound most fords however , have a solenoid on the starter and also one under the hood check solenoid under the hood' if that is not the problem, then u have either stripped teeth on the starter gear, or stripped teeth on flywheel
no this is not a computer problem.it is either a starter motor problem or the ring gear on flywheel is worn
If it is a mechanical issue then look at your flywheel teeth carefully. If it is electrical then you are either getting poor quality starters, or the exhaust is running too hot and making the starter go bad. It is also possible that the starter is not the fault, but a wiring failure going to the starter.
starters turn but doesnt crank? If the starters are turning and engaging they will at leat be turning the flywheel, unless there is tooth damage. try to rock the vehicle in gear to test. look at bottom pulley (where the belts are) to see if crank is turning, both when starter is turned and when rocked in gear, this will at least tell you that the flywheel is attached to the crankshaft, and if it turns off the starter motor it also shows the starter motor is working correctly. If this is turning via the starter motor the next thing i would check it the timing/cam belt. behind the plastic cover behind all the belts, especially if the engine is turning fast, wirring and not making the usual chug chug chug starter noise!
I'm not sure what you mean by "slips". Is the starter making a grinding noise or does the starter sound like it is missing the flywheel completely? My first thought was a bad starter drive (part of the starter) but if you replaced the starter with a new one it shouldn't be that.
