It is called the string family because all the instruments in the sting family have 4 or more strings.

the violin, viola, cello and double bass all have 4 stings where as the harp has 47 stings and 7pedals.

The strings are in front of the stage because they're not as loud as the brass, which are placed in the rear. Placement on the stage varies among conductors' preferences, and the requirements of the compositions to be performed. Generally, the bass viols and cellos are separated from the first and second violins--bass and cellos normally to the right as you face the stage, violins to the left. Violas usually lie between the four other string groups, just on the other side of the conductor.

A single wind instrument is generally louder than a single string instrument, so the string section needs more players to keep balance.
