Stem cells themselves are not controversial. There are different types of stem cells. Hematopoietic stem cells are the building blocks of blood. They are found in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. They are currently used successfully to treat a number of different diseases. These are not controversial at all. Embryonic stem cells are controversial because they are obtained from embryos. Some people believe that using embryos to produce stem cells is unethical.

The 'embryos' the anti-stem cell voice talk about contain about 75 - 200 cells, and are known as blastocytes. The cells are undifferentiated, meaning they as yet have no purpose. The Pro-Life movement refer to this collection of cells as a human being about 2-4 days after fertilization.

Blastocytes are the best source of undifferentiated stem cells, and those used would be the excess discarded after IVF. They would generally be destroyed - why not use them to save human life? For Pro-Life- destroy these 'embryos' or use them to save life? Please explain your stance!

The controversy over stem cells results from the fact that the human embryo is a convenient source (although not the only source) of stem cells; therefore, this connects to the very controversial issue of abortion. In order to use an embryo as a source of stem cells, it first has to be aborted.

What is the most controversial issue of biology?

"Most controversial" needs some qualifiers. Among American fundamentalist Christian communities, macroevolution is contested, but creating transgenic organisms is not of any concern. In Europe on the other hand, genetically modified food is extremely controversial, wheras macroevolution is a widely accepted theory. Nationwide in the US, embryonic stem cell research is possibly the biggest controversy. Stem cell research is extremely promising and may be the way to cure numerous human diseases. Human embryos may be the only source of pluripotent stem cells. A large demographic opposes the destruction of human embryos. The number of people who oppose embryonic stem cell research is by most estimates much larger than the number of people who care about other issues in biology (such as macroevolution) and the stakes in terms of public health are likely also higher than any other issue in biology. By those reasonable standards, embryonic stem cell research is the biggest controversy in biology in the united states for now.

Why is wrong to use adult stem cells?

Well, there are controversial views with regards to stem cell research. Some would say that stem cell research is important as it has the potential to save many lives and greatly improve our medical knowledge. However, many would argue that it is 'playing God' and that we should not be using stem cells, as it is not natural - not how things were meant to be.

What do you think is the reason why some people are against stem cell research?

The primary reason and most important reason is that some people are scientifically illiterate. They don't understand the science behind the research and they do not have even the basic education to begin to understand it. They don't even try to understand it and they let others try to explain it to them but those people often have some sort of agenda. Science itself is not good or bad, it is what is done with it. If all of society doesn't what to use this knowledge, a least we all have made the decision not just a handful. There are two methods of stem cell research. 1. Embryonic stem cell and 2. Adult stem cell. There is not somuch opposition of manipulating the stem cells from adult cells. On the other hand, Embryonic stem cell research involves the value of life. Thus the main issue for embryonic stem cell research is whether potential embryonic life should be treated with honor and human dignity. Which itself is only a religious viewpoint and not science fact.
