The fast of Gedaliya commemorates the murder of the last governor of Judea some 2,000 years ago. It is commemorated on the first weekday after Rosh Hashana. In 2008 this will be Thursday, 2 October.
One does not fast on Rosh Hashana. However, one does fast on Yom Kippur.

Some Orthodox men go to mikvah. Fruits are purchased for Rosh Hashanah. Some people choose to fast.
There is a tradition of eating pomegranates during Rosh Hashana because of the many seeds they contain. Some people have the tradition that they contain 613 seeds which matches the 613 mitzvot in the Torah. Also, on Rosh Hashana, Jews eat apples dipped in honey, to symbolize a sweet new year.
