Energy is reduced as you go further up the pyramid.

For example, let's start at the bottom of the food chain.

Autotrophs get their energy directly from the sun, so they have the most energy.

heterotrophs eat autotrophs. There is less energy in the heterotroph because the energy is released as heat, used for growth, or used as respiration.

Food pyramids willy typically only have four or five trophic levels for a few reasons. One is that it is easier to read.

Energy is lost as heat and diminishes at each level by 10% at the first and then 90% the rest of the levels. hahhah:) hopefully this is right because it's what i put....
