It seems - from my own experience! - that one may have occasional mucus in a stool. If in your case the mucus is more the rule than the exception, you might want to see your doctor and be checked out. Sometimes mucus can be an indicator of cancer.

mucus in feces is to provide the nescessary amount of moist to make the process of defecation easy and to prevent any damage to the rectum and anal walls

notice when you have constipation, it's difficult to defecate because feces isn't moist enough

Yes, there are trace amounts of mucus in feces. There is even more mucus in feces when someone has a disease such as irritable bowl syndrome. If there are noticeable amounts of mucus in your feces, especially if you are having other symptoms, you should see a doctor.
