Diffusion (of oxygen etc) takes place across a maximum distance of about 1 cm. Therefore, large organisms need a transport system to carry the oxygen to all cells - and remove the waste (carbon dioxide).

The transport system is also used to take cells nutrients - the products of digestion. If this did not occur, only the cells of the lower digestive tract, where nutrient absorption takes place, would get the nutrients they need. Without these nutrients throughout the body, the cells would die.

The transport system is also very important in the immune response. It allows white blood cells to get to the site of infection etc.

It also is often used to take hormones to their target organs e.g. epinephrine (adrenaline).

Is active transport vital to living organisms?

Yes it is. There are many examples of active transport in living organisms.1. Plant roots absorb minerals from the soil water surrounding them by active transport.2. In the Human body, the glucose formed during digestion passes from the small intestine into the blood stream by active transport.

Why is transport materials essential in living organisms?

Essential materials, such as nutrients and oxygen have to be transported to different parts of the body in living organisms. Without this mechanism, life will not be sustained.

What kingdom has organisms that are only alive when living inside a cell?

Virus

Are Viruses able to reproduce without using other organisms?

viruses are dormant when they are not inside a living cell. that means they don't have living characteristics when outside a living cell. they only reproduce when they are inside a living cell.

Why is it important to classify living organisms?

Classification provides a common language for scientists, and gives a common reference point with already identified organisms.

What are the limits to diffusion as a means of transport for living organisms?

Diffusion is a rapid process and is therefore limited to shorter distances. Transport is includes the change of wastes, nutrients and gases.
