There are actually many animals such as vertebrates that have red blood cells. Some simpler animals have an open circulatory system.

They have very different jobs. Red blood cells travel around the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells that need them, and they also take back what the cell doesn't need.
White blood cells help to fight and consume bacteria, viruses, and anything else that attacks the body.

- Make up less than 1% of blood

∙ 6y agoThey are unusual because they have no organelles like a nucleus. This allows them to be packed full of hemoglobin, the molecule that binds to oxygen. Because they have no organelles, they can not repair themselves and become battered and torn by 120 days and they must be recycled.
