Why is word order important in a poem?

Suppose we say 'I had a strange experience today'. And suppose we want to make it a line of poetry. An experienced person will change the order of words into 'Today I had a strange experience.' This new order of words suits the form of poetry more and helps its singing. A talented and experienced person can even change prose into acceptable poetry this way.

The difference is in the word order. Word order makes a significant difference to Sam and Pat!

In some languages, the subject (e.g. Sam in the first sentence) takes a different form from the object (e.g. Pat in the first sentence). But in English that hardly happens.
