Why is your dog hacking like he has to vomit?

A couple reasons my dog was coughing was because she had a collapsed trachea, which didn't hurt her but there was irritation in the throat, causing her to cough. Another reason my dog coughs is because she has an enlarged heart, vertically, and so her heart pushes on her lungs, causing coughing. Another possibility could be Allergies. There are many possible answers to this, to be sure, have the pet looked at by a Vet.

Sometimes dogs do this short term, because they have an obstruction or even a furball, and are trying to clear their throat. If it happens only once or twice, it is unlikely to be a concern. If it continues, take your dog to a vet. There is obviously a problem.

There is nothing much you really can do. Hacking in dogs is the equivalent of a human coughing.
You can rub your dog's throat to soothe it and offer your dog some water.
The common reasons a dog will hack is due to furballs, irritants in the air, dry throat or trapped food.

However if you feel your dog is hacking too often, see a vet, as excessive hacking is a sign of something much worse.
