When you reboot your computer your clear out your RAM(Random Access Memory). This is the memory that you computer uses to run programs. The reason this is import is because, some programs have memory leaks, which really means that if you have 512ram in your system and you ran a program with a memory leak, You may now be running with 256 ram.

A memory leak happens when a programmer uses a certain part of memory and doesn't free it up before the program exits. So restarting your computer will force the memory to be freed When you reboot your computer your clear out your RAM(Random Access Memory). This is the memory that you computer uses to run programs. Its to give you a break. There isn't any special purpose.

But the need for one to restart a computer is mainly due to the monolithic style of Operating System kernel. If the OS kernel is having a microkernel architecture, then a particular sub system can be rebooted without need to reboot the whole system.

The reason for the reboot is for eg, to integrate drivers into the system kernel where the integration could only be done when that part of the kernel isn't being used. (in simple terms a different process cannot write to a file when its opened for reading(or writing previously) to maintain coherency). Same with the case of the system specific files.

When the computer is functioning the various system specific files are up and running. And if an installation of a driver needs to update or merge something to those files which are already used by another process, ie the OS then it couldn't be done without closing it. And closing it means you need to close the whole OS since it runs as a single large executable due to its monolithic design. So one needs to reboot.

One might reboot their computer for a plethora of reasons. If the computer is lagging, and there appears to be too much RAM being used, if the computer or an application has gone through an upgrade and needs a reboot to function properly.
