You would upgrade RAM if you wanted to improve the performance of your computer when it runs desktop applications and web browsers. If your computer is running fine when you are running applications then you do not have to upgrade the RAM that is optional and up to the owner of the computer. Upgrading your RAM could also increase the speed of which a web page loads and pictures load when you are Surfing the read, but it will not give you a big increase of speed. Even though RAM will not give you as big of an increase of speed as having a good network connection, using RAM would be a cheaper alternative if you need applications to run better and want a little faster speed when surfing the web.

RAM is the temporary storage space the operating system and applications use to store data in use. Accessing RAM is much faster than trying to access data on hard drive.

Upgrading RAM, usually by adding more, allows more data to stored before having to resort to using the hard drive, known as swapping.

Additional performance can be gained, by using higher clocked memory, lower latency memory, or by using dual channel mode.

RAM is the central memory where the microprocessor can "process" the information.

When lots of applications run simultaneously (or one big application), you can have a lack of free RAM.

In this case, the operating system usually uses the Hard Disk Drive instead as temporary memory (it's called swapping)... but this device is very very slower than the RAM and data can't be processed there.

If you never use more than your installed RAM, your system won't be a lot more efficient.

But if you always use all your installed RAM or more, upgrading your memory will make your system a lot more faster and convenient to use.

Modern operating systems place higher and higher demands on resources, ram being one of them. If the memory demands of the operating system and applications exceed the available physical memory, then you must swap with the page file. Being on disc, the page file is millions of times slower than ram. This can lead to enormous performance degradation. This does not mean that total allocated memory (commit charge) cannot exceed physical memory - this means that short term working set memory must be less than physical memory, or you will see poor performance. If your swap file hit-miss ratio is poor, you need more ram.

Ram is where the computer does most of it's work. Generally speaking, the more ram the better the computer will perform. RAM is used like this:-

Think you have 1000 MB of ram. If you are copying a 5000 MB file, if it takes 1 minute to copy a 1000 MB file. Then it will take 5 minutes to copy the 5000 MB file.

If you have 5000 MB RAM then it will take 1 minute to copy the 5000 MB file.

So, I say that the more the RAM the faster your Comp. is.

Answer

There are a lot more factors involved in copying a file than just the amount of dynamic ram available.

Accessing dynamic ram is fast, very fast, in the order of nano seconds (Billionths of a second).

Accessing a hard drive is relatively slow (Milliseconds) in the order of thousandths of a second.

On an IBM PC clone and some other designs of systems the hard drive space is not only used to store files, but when the dynamic ram of the computer is filled with program data and executables, it is used as an overflow where programs that don't fit into the dynamic ram is stored. This technique is called page filing and the "overflow" file is called a swap file.

When a page of a program which needs to be processed is called if it fails to load in time this creates a "page error" and the page is scheduled to be loaded at the next available period. This causes delays in the execution of the program and is perceived by the user as the machine slowing down.

The optimum way to operate a computer is to ensure that there is enough free memory to run the operating system and the programs required in dynamic ram and negate the use of the hard drive to extend the available free memory. It's worth noting that' more memory does not actually increase the base speed of your computer, it simply optimise's the use of the processor to its fullest potential.

As a side note, the use of a swap file to extend the available dynamic memory on a computer was initially instigated when dynamic ram was very expensive and difficult to get hold of. As time goes by and the cost of dynamic memory becomes cheaper, it is likely that the swap file system may eventually be relegated to history and this speed issue will become irrelevant.

You might want to upgrade it because then with the upgrading you can put more temporary information in it.
