Ovum has a layer of zona pellucida around itself. When a sperm enters the ovum, the cortical granules present in the ovum, causes the thickening of the zona pellucida. This prevents the entry of other sperms in the ovum and only one sperm is able to fertilize the egg.

As soon as one sperm penetrates the ovum, the ovum's cell membrane changes immediately so that no additional sperm cells can penetrate.

What do you call the fertilized egg cell?

A fertilized cell is when a mature ovum (egg) is fertilized by a sperm. It becomes a fertilized cell. The sperm enters the ovum and the tail drops off. Then mitosis occurs and the cell continues to develop.

The female gamete is called what?

The female gamete is called an ovum or an egg. This is the cell that is fertilized by the male gamete known as the sperm.

How does fertilisation occurs?

Fertilization occurs when a sperm cell and an ovum fuse, resulting in a fertilized egg.

Where is an ovum normally fertilized by a sperm cell?

fertilisation takes place in ampulla of uterine tube

How can fertilization happen?

Fertilization occurs when a sperm cell and an ovum fuse, resulting in a fertilized egg.

What is the name of the cell that results from the union of sperm and the ovum?

Fertilization is the short answer. This process results in a fertilized egg known as a zygote.

When the ovum is fertilized by the sperm this is called?

How Is Sperm Cell Fertalized?

Sperm cells fertilize the ovum, they are not fertilized. The primary reason for how the term is used is because most sperm compete to reach and penetrate the egg.

Where is the ovum fertilized?

Fertilization of the ovum by a sperm cell occurs in the third of the Fallopian tube nearest each ovary. Interesting fact: The fallopian is about the diameter of a pencil. The ovum is about the size of a period on a page.

How many sperm can be fertilized an ovum?

The exact number of egg cells that can be fertilized is exactly the same as the number of egg cells that are available. For example, in a salmon, about 7,000,000. In a human, normally one, occasionally two to three, rarely up to five and very, very rarely up to seven. Just because they 'can be' fertilized though does not mean that they 'will be' fertilized!

What is the cell formed by the sperm and the ovum?

The cell formed by the sperm and the ovum is called a zygote. It is the earliest stage of human development and contains the complete set of genetic information from both parents. The zygote then undergoes cell division to form an embryo, which eventually develops into a fetus.

What is the difference between an ovule and an ovum?

An ovule is the female reproductive structure in plants that develops into a seed after fertilization. An ovum, on the other hand, is the female reproductive cell (egg) in animals that can be fertilized by a sperm cell to form an embryo.
