Because people love having something to fear. And since the real Illuminati went out of business in 1785 or thereabouts, you don't have to really worry, deep down inside, that Illuminati are really out there endangering you. No living person has ever been proven to be an Illuminatus in a court of law.
It is fun to be scared when you know deep inside that there is no real chance of harm. That is why the most popular carnival rides are the ones that *look* dangerous.

The original Illuminati was a 17th Century Bavarian society, one of many by the way, whose main goal was to promote Freethinking and Enlightenment ideals for the benefit of mankind. It was destroyed when the Bavarian government at the time banned secret societies. I mean, even the name itself, Illuminati, means "To Enlighten" or something. It only sounded like an evil organization because opponents of the Enlightenment Era - Aristocrats, The Church, Conservatives, Monarchists etc. wanted a popular scapegoat which they could use to demonize the Enlightenment Ideals of democracy, scientific method, liberty etc. as a source of evil, like how Nazis pinned the Jews. They pinned the Illuminati as a secret plot to take over the world and impose a Secular Humanist, Oh-So-Scientific society. (Personally, i find nothing wrong with that. Its time idiot upper class that control the world gets their conservative totally destroyed)

Since the Illuminati still does not exist (haven't since 1785) it would be a pure waste of time and effort for anyone to be against them.
