One of the reasons people in portraits may look strange, or seem uncomfortable or angry is because they were having themselves painted. It's not like getting your picture taken, it took hours to do a portrait.

It's understandable if the one being painted got impatient, or bored or angry. They were probably very tired and uncomfortable.

Also many people when they got their selves painted wanted to look serious or sophisticated and smart, or had a certain look they wanted to come across so they were often painted deliberately that way.

And sometimes it was just the style of the artist.
