Because so many people use television as a babysitter for children, which causes them to become addicted to watching. That's they only thing they know how to do, if the parents are not involved with teaching their children

∙ 13y agoTelevision is popular because it is easy entertainment. Unlike most other forms of entertainment, television is brought right into homes so there is no effort to receive it. It is a passive form of entertainment - A viewer has no need to become involved and has no need to interact with any other people. Contrast this passive involvement with a theater, a concert or sporting event in which one has at least a limited interaction with other spectators or performers.
Television brings with it a huge choice of content. It is very easy to find something on air that will entertain. At least, if there is nothing appealing, it is easy to find something that is not objectionable.
Television is also a habit. Many people turn on a television simply for background noise and images.
