Why has petrol been the main fuel for cars?
For the last 100 years or so, petrol has been the main source of fuel. It was first produced in the 1850's by Ignacy Lukasiewicz through the method of distillation from crude oil. It became the most popular fuel because it was much cheaper then other fuels of the time like whale oil and it was readily available. The first car to run on petrol was made in Germany in 1885, and since then nearly all cars have run on petrol. Petrol-cars have become reliable, more efficient and faster. Petrol seems like an almost perfect fuel; nearly all engines are designed to use it.

What A meter fixed to a vehicle that measures and displays its speed?
In most vehicles it is a speedometer; in commercial vehicles a tachograph is used. The tachograph not only measures and displays the speed but also records the distance and speed driven over time; it is also more accurate than those in cars with an error of about 1-2% whereas those in cars are only accurate to about 10% and generally over estimate speed. They are checked every 2 years for calibration and recalibrated every 6 years unlike those in cars.
Asked in Hybrid Cars
What is the difference between parallel hybrid cars and series hybrid cars?
Parallel hybrids: These have a fuel tank that supplies petrol to the engine as well as a set of batteries that supplies power to the electric motor. Both the engine and the electric motor can turn the transmission at the same time. Series hybrids: These vehicles have a petrol engine that turns a generator. The generator can do two things. It can either charge the batteries or power an electric motor that drives the transmission. In these types of hybrids the petrol engine never directly powers the vehicle.

What are the advantages to carpooling?
Carpooling is when several people who work together, or who live in the same area, get together and share one car to come to work, instead of each driving a car. The advantages are: * fewer cars on the road, not so many traffic jams. * only one car's gas (petrol) is used, so there is a saving on the other cars. Every time a car is driven it contributes by its carbon emissions to building up the greenhouse gas layer, which is causing climate change and global warming.
How many cars are driven daily in the world?
<<Answer under construction>> Googling [number of cars driven], you can find this: Brooklyn Public Library. Electronic Mail. 30 May 2001."Citing Ward's Motor Vehicle Facts & Figures, 1999, this almanac reports that, in 1996, the most recent date covered, there were 485 954 000 cars registered worldwide, and 185,404,000 trucks and buses, for a total, worldwide, of 671 358 000 motor vehicles." But 1996 is not 2010. Just like human population, car population rises quickly, with (at least some) estimates speaking of a doubling in 30 years time.

What do you do when you put petrol in a diesel car?
I always ran my Volkswagen diesel in the winter one gallon of petrol to a tank of fuel. At this time diesel was not being made with anti freeze additive so lorries and early cars on diesel would fuel freeze in severe weather. I had two cars and both ran for 100,000 giving me no engine problems so a small amount will not bother a tank full of diesel or the engine
