Best Answer

The salt eats the ice, then releases the water The elements in salt (NaCl) reacts with the elements in water (H2O) in a way that produces energy. In this case it is heat energy which raises the temp of the ice above 32 degrees F and the ice melts. Adding salt to water will make it boil faster for the same reason

A salt (sodium chloride) and ice mixture can, under the best circumstances, be made to have a melting point of zero degrees Fahrenheit.

I've always thought that too, because that's how Fahrenheit fixed the zero point on his temperature scale. However, I've just checked and the correct answer seems to be "about minus 6 degrees Fahrenheit".

(If you are taught at school that the answer is "zero", best give that as the answer in any tests.)

Ice starts melting as soon as the temperature reaches 320 F ( 00 C ) or on any temperature above it , as this is the freezing point of ice. When we add sugar or salt, the melting point of ice is lowered due to which it will melt even faster as ice melts on any temperature above it's freezing point.

Salt water needs REALLY cold temperatures to freeze so when ice touches salt it mixes with it and becomes salt water and it can't freeze.

It depends on amount of salt added and many other factors like pressure.

Yes. That's why most northern states spread a mix of salt and sand over roads in the winter.
