Servers can have physical drives just like your computer or they can have network attached drives, which is really another server that has many drive that are provisioned to provide more space than a regular disks can.

A server, unlike your computer, must be able to store much more data. With modern servers, the server's hard drive is only used to load the operating system. The connected drives offer storage only.

How do you setup a computer network?

If the computer network is to have internet, then you would need a modem connected via a phone line or cable connection. Then the modem is usually connected to a Router, that in turn connects to a "Switch". All the computers then connect to the Switch through ethernet cable (cat5 or cat6). One computer is often designated as the "Server", a central point to hold the programs and data for the other computers (clients) to use. INTERNET --> MODEM--> ROUTER --> SWITCH --> SERVER --> COMPUTERS (In some cases, the router can also serve as the switch as well).

Virtualizing server is disadvantage for VOIP?

VoIP server need fast internet connection, high end computers tight firewall or security and often maintenance.

What do a server do?

A server is a computer that serves information to other computers. These computers, called clients, can connect to a server through either a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN), such as the internet. There are a number of different types of servers, including Web servers, mail servers, and file servers. A web server serves Web pages to computers that connect to it. It also can parse scripting languages such as PHP, ASP, and JSP. A mail server stores users' e-mail accounts and sends and receives e-mail messages. For example, when you send an e-mail to a friend, the message is sent by a mail server, using the SMTP protocol. A file server is a computer that stores files that can be accessed by other computers. File servers are often used within local networks and typically require a password or some kind of authentication to connect to it.These are a few examples of some common servers, but several other types of servers exist. Just about any computer can be used as a server if the necessary server software is installed on it. While servers typically don't need a lot of processing power, lots of RAM and fast hard drives are helpful for dealing with heavy traffic to and from the server.

What is the case of the computer?

The "case" of the computer is the box that holds all the computers parts. Hard Drive, Motherboard, Disk Drives, etc. Computer Cases are often made of aluminum of plastic

What are 2 types of computer?

Computers come in a variety of shapes and forms, and can be categorized in many different ways.Personal computers are computer systems for use by an individual. Today's personal computers are desktop systems, laptop or netbook systems. More recently, powerful tablet computers may also be categorized as personal computers.Mainframe computers are more powerful computer systems, designed for use by more than one individual.Embedded computers are often hidden (embedded) in another device, and do not generally take a form commonly recognized as a computer. For example, a modern washing machine has an embedded computer.Another distinction can be made based on the computer's use.A computer may be used as a standalone computer for local operations such as word processing, as is the case with computers used without a network connection. Computers may be used as client computers, consuming services and data offered by another computer, as is the case with most networked (Internet-connected) personal computers. Other computers may be used as server computers, designed to offer services to client computers, as is the case with a web server, for example. Most computers in use today have more than one task, and take on the role of both client and server (and generally that of a standalone device).Another distinction can be made on the type of tasks a computer can handle:Some computers are designed for a specific task, as is often the case with embedded computers. Other computers are designed as general-purpose computers, as is the case with most personal computers.Another distinction can be made on grounds of mobility:mobile computers are those that can draw power from a battery, and which can be carried around with relative ease. Modern smart phones, tablet computers, netbooks and laptops (and some embedded computers) are mobile devices.Stationary computers are those that are not mobile, as is the case with mainframe computers, some models of personal computers, and many embedded computers.

Why are IDE drives often referred to as disposable drives?

How can you find out if your wireless router is being used by outside sources?

If they are monitoring-only, you can't tell. If they are using your wireless to surf the web, any monitoring software will tell you. You can also check your DHCP server for unknown clients and watch your network neighborhood to see if computers you don't know are popping up. I have an open wireless (intentionally) and often see other computers in my network neighborhood.

Why is dhcp rarely used to assign addresses for servers?

Often it is the server that is hosting the DHCP, so it can not assign its own address. But usually its just useful if the servers always have the same IP address. For example if a server is hosting a DNS server (as company servers often do), and all the workstations in the company are looking to that IP address for DNS info, the IP addrss can not change. If the IP address of the DNS server were to change then no computers on the network would be able to resolve domain names.

What are two potential problems with using tape media to back up server data?

Data tapes are prone to failure and must be replaced often. Tape drives require regular cleaning to maintain reliability.

What is an external server?

An external server is a computer, or series of computers, that link other computers or electronic devices together. They often provide essential services across a network, either to private users inside a large organization or to public users via the internet. For example, when you enter a query in a search engine, the query is sent from your computer over the internet to the servers that store all the relevant web pages. The results are sent back by the server to your computer.

Do people with a lot of data often own their own mainframe computers?

Not usually. Plus, the name "mainframe" isn't used much anymore. There are people that will have servers in their homes, either to run as a firewall, local mail server, or to maintain files, but that is fairly rare. If you have a lot of data, most people will purchase CDs or DVDs and burn the data to them for safe keeping. Others will get USB flash drives, or even USB external hard drives. That way the data can be both stored and removed if not needed anymore.

What software allows two or more people to do the same work at the same time?

In an multi-office environment, as an example, several computers, through out the offices, are using a central system, often at the same time. Such a system is known as a server system and would use specialised server software.
