The only legal requirements to hold the office of President of the United States is, apart from getting elected.

# be a natural-born citizen of the United States;

# be at least thirty-five years old;

# have been a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.

In reality, in order to be an effective President one also needs a strong understanding and knowledge of US and world history, constitutional law, foreign cultures, science, and strong sense of military and diplomatic strategy.

Sadly, most modern presidents feel all they need is a good marketing department.

It should be because of public service. People who run for president should have a strong conviction about their belief in the system and gevernance that they can run. They should also be able to know what to do and how to lead the country.
