Why is it harmful to turn off power to your computer without first shutting it down?

Almost all computers have tasks that are either ongoing or need to be done before it is shut down, thus, cutting the power to it could have negative effects on it, as compared to allowing it to communicate to these tasks that it needs them to either run or stop, and letting them do what they need to do.
