Because some elements have been known for so long that their names don't come from the English language.

e.g. sodium Na natrium (latin)

potassium K kalium from the Arabic word for wood-ash

iron Fe ferrum (latin)

copper Cu cuprum (latin)

silver Ag argentum (latin)

tin Sn stannum (latin)

antimony Sb Stibium (latin)

tungsten W Wolfram (German)

gold Au Aureum (latin)

Mercury Hg Hydragyrum (latin)

lead Pb Plumbum (latin

sodium (Na) , potassium (K) , tungsten (W) , iron (Fe) , copper (Cu) , silver (Ag) , gold (Au) , mercury (Hg) , tin (Sn) , lead (Pb) , and antimony (Sb)

All but one of these elements match up with a latin name: sodium = natrium; potassium = kalium; iron = ferrum; copper = cuprum; silver = argentum; gold = aurum; mercury = liquid silver = hydrargyrum; tin = stannum; lead = plumbum; antimony = stibium.

The exception is tungsten, which is sometimes called wolfram. Tung sten is Swedish for heavy stone; Wolf Rahm is German for wolf's breath.

Because the symbol is based on the Latin name of the element. For example, Lead, Pb, is plumbum in Latin.

Why do some of the elements on the periodic table don't match their Symbol?

Because not all of the elements were founded by people who speak English which caused the symbols to be converted to be recognised in there language to match the words and not English as it may not be the language they speak.

How many elements' chemical symbol does not correspond with their name?

There are no elements whose symbol does not match their name -- in some language! The elements known to the ancients all match their latin names: Pb = plumbum = lead. Sn = stannum = tin. Cu = cuprum = copper. Au = aurum = gold Ag = argentum = silver Hg = hydrargyrum = mercury A few more recently discovered elements also match their latin names: Na = natrium = sodium K = kalium = potassium -- actually this name originally derives from the Arabic "al kali" -- recognize it? Sb = stibium = antimony One element has a symbol that matches its German name: W = Wolfram = tungsten I guess that makes about 10 elements whose symbol does not match their English name. Hope I have not forgotten any!

Why do some elements have names and symbol that do not match their English names?

Because there are languages other than English, and elements have different names in those languages. Some of the symbols are taken from those languages instead. Latin is probably the most common; it's responsible for Fe, Na, K, Cu, Ag, Au, Sn, Sb, and Pb (at least... there may be a few others I missed). Tungsten is called Wolfram in some countries, and its symbol W comes from that name.
