Grendel is a descendent of Cain, the first murderer.
Grendel is a descendent of Cain, a biblical figure known for committing the first murder. In the epic poem Beowulf, Grendel is portrayed as a monstrous descendant of this cursed lineage, often viewed as a symbol of evil and chaos.
Cain is derived from the biblical story of Cain and Able. Cain and Able are the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain murders his brother and is the first human to commit murder, an atrocity. Because Cain is essentially the most evil man in history (because he committed the first murder) and the poem was changed by Christian missionaries to convert Anglo-Saxons to Christians, Grendel is naturally a descendant from Cain.
It gives you extra background information to build a better picture of his character and is also used as foreshadowing (later Beowulf must fight Grendel's mother).

During the time Beowulf was written, lineage was greatly valued as it determined a person's status, reputation, and potential for greatness. By questioning Beowulf about his lineage, Hrothgar's soldier was assessing Beowulf's worthiness and qualifications to fulfill his mission of defeating Grendel. This interaction highlights the importance of ancestry and heritage in shaping a person's identity and societal role in that historical context.
