The octopus is called devilfish because it wraps its prey (food) in its many legs and to escape predators (or enemies) it squirts out black ink, though the octopus is not really a devilfish.

Octo stands for its legs as if it was a shape but it has the amount of legs of how many sides of a octagon. Pus stands for it's living thing.

I actually saw the answer somewhere else as I too was curious. Yes Octo means 8 but pod means feet. So it litterally translates to 8 little feet.
