With respect to the influence and mind-set of Adolf Hitler himself, World War II happened for one simple reason: Hitler was determined to engage in a campaign of conquest. Even before attaining power in Germany in the 1930s, Hitler had publicly voiced his intention to secure greater prosperity and expanded "living space" for the German people. Throughout his rule, he also spoke of and acted on ambitions to settle old scores and redress imbalances in political and military matters. In all, World War II occurred because of these commitments on Hitler's part.
