He originally did not want to be a politician, he had wanted to be a painter, but was rejected twice when applying to school. He had only decided on politics after being in the military. Also Hitler was deeply unsatisfied with how soldiers were treated in the war.

Hitler joint politics as he wanted to be the supreme power which he could be only in politics and also as he wanted money to conquer a large part of the world or for the Holocaust.

It's good to keep in mind that one slogan of the campaign back then was 'Alles muss anders sein' which means everything must be different.

Basically, Hitler ran on a platform of 'hope and change'.
