The first time Andrew Jackson ran for president, his opponents were John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and William H. Crawford. The election went down to Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. Since Henry Clay was the Speaker of the House, he had a great influence. He told his supporters to vote for Adams. When John Quincy Adams won the election and appointed Henry Clay as secretary of state, Jackson's supporters claimed that the two men had made a "corrupt bargain."

The second time Jackson ran for President, more people were able to vote. Jackson thought that ordinary people should be able to vote, so most people voted for him.
