A unique style, with outstanding descriptions, able to create vivid images in our minds (the best are those of his contemporary soot-covered London), and a very elegant language.
The plots are moral and intricate, with secrets finally revealed in the end of the novel, with the wicked always punished and with partial or complete happy endings. All subjects are designed to publicise a social evil and to suggest a way to right it.

Charles Dickens began his career in the literary world as a journalist, writing articles and stories for various publications. He then transitioned to writing serialized novels, starting with "The Pickwick Papers" in 1836, which became a huge success. Dickens's experiences growing up in poverty and working in a shoe polish factory influenced his writing and themes, leading him to become one of the most famous novelists of the Victorian era.

Most of Dickens' novels and stories were based on his own life experiences. This was not so "unusual", but the way he did it was. He was a great describer of real people...and he put real people in his stories. He "changed the names to protect the guilty"..(smile). He was also one of the first writers to use the vernacular of the common people and the way they actually spoke. That was "unusual". Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) did the same thing in his American stories and novels. I think Clemens was very much influenced by Dickens in his style of writing, though separated by an ocean and culture.

Charles Dickens' novels (first published in weekly or monthly installments) were mostly written in the style of social commentary--he was a fierce critic of class and poverty, which is why many of his works tended to be 'poor-boy-made-good' (David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit, etc.) in essence. There was also an autobiographical feel to some of his works--he was ashamed of what he considered his lowly past, which he took pains to cover up. There was a certain sentimentality to his writing (the death of Little Nell), too. His writing mostly highlighted the life of the poor, forgotten and disadvantaged--through his writings, the whole of Victorian society came to be described as 'Dickensian'.

After school, Dickens was a law clerk then a court reporter. During that time, he began writing 'sketches' or character studies of people and situations he observed in those jobs. He submitted them to monthly magazines under the name "Boz" and many were pubished in that way. Soon, though, as their popularity grew, he was able to publish The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club under his own name. He became instantly famous and never worked at a job again.

Having been considered one of the greatest writers of the Victorian period, it appears that two main things made his writings classics: quirky character names and his ability to vividly show what life was like for the working class and the poor in England during the time that he lived. I think that these two aspects are reasonable to point out because some of his characters' names are wildly recognized due to them being so memorable (for example, Scrooge and David Copperfield). These characters are also memorable because of their presence in mostly stories that concern poverty, which is ever present in our world.
