it never remain independent, it was under the fascist Italians for 4-5yrears! in the 1935-1941 by Mussolini. in that time haileslasie was fled to England to protect him self, as he couldn't defeat the Italians, to then come back after the English men free the whole horn-Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia,Libia) from fascist regime!

but if u mean before the Musolini regime, Yeah, Ethiopia was independent, but Eritrea was under Italians since 1889-1941. in that time Ethiopia had different Kingdoms that could defend their territories. and this is the fact that explains also, that Eritrea and Ethiopia was Not A ONE state/country. thos koingdoms had under controll the whole Ethiopia, but not the Eritrean Region.

The other thing is, may be Ethiopia don't have much Natural Resources as other African countries does?=??
