The Final Fantasy series was originally created as a last-ditch effort to save a dying company, by the name of Squaresoft. After several of their Video Games failed, Squaresoft was on the brink of declaring bankruptcy. In the hopes of salvaging what little was left of the company, the developers got together and began discussing ideas for a last hurrah, a final game that would make or break the company. After some time, a decision was made, and production began on the game. Dubbed "Final Fantasy" because it was the company's final hope of survival, it turned out to be a major marketing point for the company, and continues to be even now.

When Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the series, started making Final Fantasy, the company he worked for released another game. They assumed that game would be a great success, but it wasn't. Sakagushi was going to cancel the production of this last game because they lost so much money, but by then the game was too far into the production phase so he decided to scrap the end of it together and hope for some sales to reimburse his loss. Assuming this would be his last game, he titled it 'Final Fantasy'. The game was a success (A big one, if you remember), and Final Fantasy II played off of that success. From there the series became what we're familiar with.

The original gaming company was not doing well in Japan, matter a fact the company was actually about to shut down. The put all their efforts into one last game, if it failed then the company would end. Thus it became the Final Fantasy, their last hope. And as you can tell it saved the day. An interesting little fun fact that everyone should know =)

The name Final Fantasy came from Hironobu Sakaguchi, who worked as the games main designer. He had become disillusioned with the sameness of the games being produced for the market and was considering going back to university to pursue a different career path. Hironobu focused on making the new game as unique as possible, deciding that the success or failure of the game would be the determining factor as to whether he continued a career in video games. Choosing the name Final Fantasy was a small joke referring to the situation.

The original Final Fantasy sold over 400,000 copies, going to be a major gaming franchise and household name among role playing gamers.

Final Fantasy got this name purely because it was supposed to be the developer's last ever game.

The developer, Square, was struggling to make any profit from their games because they were producing awfully unpopular titles such as Rad Racer and World Runner 3D.

They called the game Final Fantasy to let everyone know that it is their final game idea before they were going to shut down the company.

However, they got lucky, because Final Fantasy became so incredibly popular that the company decided to stay open after all.
