Theodore Roosevelt only served 6 months short of two terms (8 years). Franklin D. Roosevelt was the ONLY US President elected to 4 terms. He only served a few months into his 4th term because of death.

Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for reelection three times because he could. Before 1951, there was no law saying he couldn't. Before Roosevelt's presidency, it was a tradition to serve no more than two terms, following in the footsteps of George Washington, who chose not to run for a third term.
