The Bible, at Genesis 6:5, says that God saw that the wickedness of man was great. He brought on a flood to destroy man, but allowed Noah to live, because he was righteous. However, the bible goes on to describe great wickedness after the time of the Flood, including for example, the Tower of Babel and the story of Sodom and Gommorah. According to the Bible itself, it seems that nothing was achieved by the Flood. So in the biblical story, Noah and his family were only important in that they continued the human race.

First off, Noah's ark is not a story. It is REAL. The account of Noah's ark is important because it shows us that God is not just a loving person. He can be violent. I think we make Noah's ark a children's story because we don't want to think about the fact that just as God can be loving and gentle, He can be just as violent.

Noah's covenant does not have a specific importance to the Israelites. It included all of humanity and was centered around a Divine promise concerning physical things (Noah's family would survive the Flood; there wouldn't be another Flood).

Genesis 6:9 says that "Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation." So, he was chosen for his righteousness, but biblical commentators have long noted the "in his generation" comment. Perhaps nobody was more righteous in Noah's time, but perhaps Noah wouldn't stand up to the standards of other generations. When God threatened to destroy Sodom, Abraham argued that this would be unjust if it took any innocent lives. When God told Noah to prepare for the flood, Noah didn't say a thing, he just built his ark.

What is the biblical symbolism of Noah's Ark?

Noah's Ark is a symbol both of judgment and of salvation. The judgment is in the worldwide flood which made the Ark a necessity. The salvation is in the Ark itself which 'saved' the righteous remnant, Noah and his family from destruction.

What do the specific instructions about Noah's ark suggest?

The ark was the way of salvation (from the flood) for Noah and his family. This was the only way Noah and his family would escape God's judgment. God communicated to Noah exact instructions to build the ark. Noah acted in faith and built the ark. God's way of salvation is specific today = the death of His son as a sacrifice for sin. This is the only way of salvation from the judgment that is coming. People accept this by faith.
