President Hoover believed that during tough economic times, people should (and somewould) help themselves. While Americans wanted their president to do something about the depression, Hoover wanted the Americans to do something about their "own" problems. Hoover stated, "The lesson should be constantly enforced that though the people support the government, the government should not support the people." He also said, "I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering." People blamed President Hoover because of his belief that government should be somewhat separated from the people. People of the 1930s wanted a frequently involved president.
