Japanese airplanes flown from the decks of Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carriers attacked and destroyed battleships of the United States Navy, at Pearl Harbor, United States Territory. An obvious act of war. Correction, Pearl Harbour wasn't part of the US until the 60s and it was the US that caused Pearl Harbour by cutting off Japans oil supply and refusing to come to an arrangement with Japan so Japan was given no choice but to bomb Pearl Harbour.

Japan wanted control of the Pacific. They hoped that if they bombed Pearl Harbor, that America would be unable to do anything about Japan having control of China, Korea, Philippines, and even Australia.

The US and Britain never took Japan seriously and wouldn’t allow their people to immigrate to the US & UK. Basically, yellow racism. This ticked off the Japanese government for years. Then the US put sanctions on Japan cos they were out of control in the Far East, acquiring lots of smaller territories which couldn’t defend themselves. So Japan felt even more threatened when the US naval fleet was moved to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Too close for comfort. So Japan decided that they would attack before the US before they attacked them. Needless to say, the surprise attack worked and nearly all the US navy ships and airplanes were decimated.
