In the mid 1880's, Europe was busy Colonizing Africa. One of the unclaimed spaces was modern-day Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, known as the "Sultanate of Zanzibar". Both the UK and German Empire wanted the land. So, they decided to split it up. The UK got Kenya and Uganda, while Germany got Tanzania. However, the UK was too busy sending its resources to South Africa, trying to build her Colonies there. So, the UK ceded the newly gained land to the Imperial British East Africa Company. Unfortunately, less than ten years later the company became bankrupt and the land was once again taken back by the UK government. They set up a Government known as the East Africa Protectorate. In 1920 the protectorate was split up and part of it became the Kenya Colony.

Five factors attracted British interest in the area: 1) the rich Arab-controlled trade in East Africa and the Indian ocean. They wanted a share in this trade. 2) The desire to stamp out the slavery practiced by the Arabs. The Royal navy achieved this. 3) The demand for local products, especially ivory and cloves in Europe. 4) The exploration of the African interior, which fascinated the Europeans. 5) The arrival of Christian missionaries in the area.

There was rivalry between the British and the Germans. Both had seized ports and made trade agreements with the locals. In 1887 the British East Africa Company leased some Arabs coastal holdings which went up to 10 miles inland.

The tension with the Germans increased when they took island of Zanzibar, the hub of the Indian Ocean trade, from the Arabs. Conflict was avoided when Germany handed over her coastal holdings to Britain in 1890. To consolidate their interests, the British claimed most of the area as a protectorate in 1895. Its border was expanded to Uganda in 1902.
