Napoleon became a great Emperor of the French at the beginning of the 19th century. In both military & civil power he establishes the modern French nation. However the idealistic revolutionary aims have little part in his prowess. What he does do is personify great leadership & he defeats all the armies of continental Europe in a whirlwind of military brilliance. Ultimately however he is defeated at Waterloo in 1815. He dies in exile on the island of St Helena in 1821. He is one of the Great Captains, one of Historys' greats: Vive L'Empereur !

Or..

The Napoleonic Code.

His military genius can't be denied. He was a gifted military commander, a master stratagist and the Emperor of France.

In the long run however it is the Civil Code or Napoleonic Code which was his greatest achievement.

Military genius and the Napoleonic Code.

become Emperor of the French by devious means, arising from the confusion & chaos arising from the Revolution & the Reign of Terror. He came to prominence as a great, young General in Northern Italy fighting against the Austrians. Between 1800 & 1809 his military prowess is unchallenged in Europe & France is the dominant power. At the same time Napoleon puts into place great reform of Civil Law in France .( Much of which is still in place to this day) His capacity for hard work & a multiplicity of thought is phenominal. Spain & Russia are his downfall, both are disaserous in different ways. Napoleon loses many, many thousands of men to the Russian winter & the 'Spanish Ulcer' saps the strength of the French. Eventually the Allies get wise to his strategy. He is exiled to Elba & then returns for the 'Hundered Days', an object lesson in a Military Campaign. He meets his Waterloo ! But it is a battle that the French should have won, they nearly did, and had the Emperor been more diligent they would have done so..... Sorry, its no good blaming subordinate commanders such as Grouchy or Ney: Napoleon was top man & he gets the blame. Finally he is exiled to St Helena & dies in 1821. Napoleon Bonaparte is was one of the great commanders in History.
