South Carolina was originally a part of the Province of Carolina, and one of the 13 original colonies that declared independence from the British Crown during the American Revolution. It was the founding state for the Confederate States of America.
At first Carolina was a single colony. However, the settlements were far apart, and it was hard to govern them. In 1712, the colony separated into North and South Carolina.
