The Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothicus ordered that all marriages cease because he was having problems finding unmarried men to draft into military service. Valentine, it is purported, continued to marry couples in secrecy. This did not please Claudius so he had valentine imprisoned, tortured and killed.

St. Valentine became a saint because he died for his faith and became a martyr. Martyrs were automatically canonized saints in the days of the early Church.
