Among the important things that Thomas Jefferson did was to draft the Declaration of Independence, which declared the 13 colonies a free and independent country. He was also instrumental in colonial policies and the negotiations that resulted in the Articles of Confederation, and later the US Constitution. As Secretary of State, he established strong diplomatic positions with the European nations. As the 3rd President, he agreed to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, doubling the size of the acknowledged territory of the US.

Because he wrote the Declaration of Independence!!!
He was president.
He made the Louisiana Purchase from the French doubling the size of the U.S. at the time.
He invented many useful things. A writing table that duplicated his letters and the Declaration of Independence. A dumb waiter that brought selected wine from the cellar to the living room. Gardening methods that improved yields. The cultivation of hemp for rope and cloth. His home at Monticello was a gem of buildings. He sent Captains Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase. This not only doubled the size of America it caused problems with the Spanish territories that were already there in California. The Spanish sent out troops looking for Lewis and Clark.
Mr. Jeffersons' Slaves were let go upon his death.
