Because back in those days most wars lasted a few months and were between 2 countries and had a Death Rate of about 100 thousand at the most. This war had over 6 million deaths with an incredible duration of 4 years. Once the war was ended, people swore never to start a war again after the tragedy caused by World War 1. [France was left in shambles, Germany went bank rupt and lost 90% of its army and most of its defence systems due to the treaty of versailles]

∙ 14y agoTechnically, It is called the War to End all Wars. BUT, the Treaty of Versailles made Germany force many payments and demiliterize the whole German army. This left many German people in poverty because of over inflation. However, in 1933, Adolf Hitler started gaining power in the Nazi party. Secretly, he started rebuilidng the German army to it's former size. This caused outrage in the rest of the countrys thus started World War II. People now believe the Treaty of Versailles is nothing more than a 20 year amistance

When world war 1 started, it was so huge in the terms of countries involved, that they thought at the time that the victor would be the victor forever and all disputes would be settled during the war.
It was also thought that the war was so horrific, so devastating that no one would ever fight again. It was hoped that the staggering loss of life would prevent countries from going to war again.

∙ 12y agoI think you are mixing up the nickname. World War I was called the "War to end all Wars". It was called that because they thought that all differences were settled between the countries. Obviously, that was false because later we had World War II.

∙ 15y agoThere were so many countries involved that they thought everyone would learn their lesson and never fight again. World War One was called "The War to End all Wars". Sadly, it didn't.
